Dash Cam Footage Saves Vancouver Driver Who Discovered His Parked BMW i8 Vandalized

Daniel Yoo had the foresight to equip his stunning BMW i8 with a dash cam, ensuring peace of mind and a reliable source of evidence in case of unexpected incidents. He visited our Richmond office on August 24th to make this thoughtful addition to his vehicle.

Daniel Yoo made a wise decision by scheduling a dash cam installation with us on August 24th. Opting for the Aoedi AD517H, one of our top 2K QHD dash cams, was a great choice. However, the most significant decision he made for his car’s protection was having the dash cam hardwired for parking mode with a PowerCell 8 Battery pack.

Valued between $149,900 to $169,900, Yoo’s BMW i8 is a substantial investment featuring futuristic scissor doors that captivate onlookers—unfortunately, even those with ill intentions. Regrettably, on the midnight of October 6th, when parked in Downtown Vancouver near Coopers’ Park in the Marina Crescent area, Yoo returned to find his BMW i8 severely damaged, with shattered windows and a broken windshield, a heartbreaking sight.

In the aftermath, shattered glass covered the surroundings, and Yoo sustained injuries while examining the devastation. Upon closer inspection, he discovered that rocks had been thrown at his i8, with one of them left on the car seat as evidence. The damage was extensive.

To unravel the mystery, Yoo turned to his dash cam footage accessed through the Aoedi mobile app. Three 20-second videos revealed the perpetrator’s face, captured in the act of targeting the i8 with stones. The individual, wearing a coat, could be seen running and lurking around, triggering alerts with loud impacts detected by the camera. Thanks to the Aoedi AD517H’s front dash cam, Yoo had irrefutable evidence of the entire incident.

On the same day, Yoo took his damaged car to Speedy Glass for repairs, facing a significant bill exceeding $10,000 due to the severity of the damage. Given the unexpected incident and expense, he submitted the dash cam footage to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, hoping for coverage of the damages.

Thanks to the footage from the Aoedi 517H, combined with the activated parking mode, Yoo could establish that he was not at fault. Under ICBC’s no-fault insurance system, if a driver is not responsible for a crash, their Basic Vehicle Damage coverage covers the vehicle repairs, up to $200,000. Consequently, ICBC covered Yoo’s expenses and repairs for his i8, sparing him from substantial financial losses.

Expressing his gratitude, Daniel Yoo stated: “I’m grateful that I had a dash cam in my car because I really didn’t think something like this could happen to me in Vancouver. I’ve read about the increasing crime rates in the news, but I really didn’t see this coming. I’m genuinely shaken.”

The Aftermath

His experience serves as a stark reminder of the importance of investing in vehicle protection, particularly in areas where unwanted road incidents are more common. In British Columbia, more than 820 crashes occur daily, and that doesn’t include incidents like vandalism, such as Yoo’s case. Ensuring not only the safety of your car but also your personal well-being, choosing a reputable dash cam and a professional installer like Aoedi is crucial.

As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. No matter the model of your vehicle, whether it’s a classic or a luxury car, installing a dash cam will always be your first line of defense.
